Karen Walker AW13 NYFW

Karen Walker’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection is a celebration of the Suffragette, her subversion of beauty, rejection of traditional prettiness, and her ability to perfectly combine modernity and utility for the woman on the march.

The silhouettes remain true to what Walker does best: charming and feminine shapes with a utilitarian and practical sensibility. The color palette and fabrication is informed by Karen Walker’s interest in the revolutionary woman – military pants, full skirts, tunics and working coats in blues executed in brushed cottons, drill and suede. The collection evolves with a juxtaposition of the work-ready shapes with ruffles, needlepoint, embroidery, and silk devoré in rich plum. This contrast moves further with patterns of gloved hands, tools, broken hearts, brutal roses and fighting angels.

Tying together the collection, Karen Walker introduces statement bags as metaphors for the attitude of the modern woman: “Hello and Goodbye,” “Faster Better Stronger” and “Liberal Miserable and Cynical.”

Karen Walker continues her collaboration with handbag designer Benah and her longstanding collaboration with Beau Coops for shoes.

The line, which is in collaboration with Benah, consists of 10 bags. The collection has at its core utility and functionality and the shapes include a phone pouch, clutch, messenger bag, utility satchel, tote, Boston bag, shoppers and an overnight bag.

The focus on functionality, impeccable craftsmanship, attention to detail and high quality materials is the basis of the range. All bags are crafted with premium cowhide in burgundy, blush, yellow, tan and navy.
